Countdown to Shirt Lab - Columbus
#ShirtLab
October 27, 2018!! Location: Columbus, OH
ULTIMATE GUEST LIST!
"As the saying goes, "It's not what you know, but who you know"....I like to take it one step further and think "It's who you know, and what they know" that can really make a difference in life.  You are the equivalent of the 5 people you surround yourself with the most.  I firmly believe in business if you surround yourself with other like-minded entrepreneurs who share the same passion as you, it can be a driving force for success.  Over the past 12 years, my business has grown leaps and bounds from the relationships I've created in the industry, bouncing ideas off others, learning tips and tricks from industry veterans, and getting that golden nugget of information that I wouldn't of thought of on my own.  For Shirt Lab, we are creating the Ultimate Guest List so you can see who will be there, what their super powers are, and who to connect with to help elevate your experience.  The networking the night before the event, during breaks, and in between sessions will be priceless.  Consider this your industry "Rolodex" to success."  - Tom Rauen

Top 10 Web Conversion Tricks
Dan helps companies identify where in their digital marketing funnel they need to focus their effort, time, and money. What works today won’t necessarily work later as your business and teams grow. That is unless you embrace a culture of continuous experiments. Breaking up and validating work lets you find out quickly what’s working, what’s not, and what to change. It’s too costly not to do this in this digital-day-and age. In our session, we’ll identify some ways to improve conversion rates on your website so you can convert more visitors to leads and sales.

Flint Crossing
I am the Owner of Print Two Impress which is a Screen Printing and Embroidery company. I also own Flint Crossing Outdoor retail store and clothing brand. Both companies are located at the same location with Screen Printing and Embroidery operation in the back building. The Front Log Cabin is our retail store for Flint Crossing Outdoors and customers of P2I.
I was a school teacher for 5 years until I took the Full time job of CIO at Hometown Lenders a local mortgage company with a few people. We grew Hometown even through the financial crisis and when I left Hometown we had over 250 employees and were doing business in 15 states.
In 2016 I decided it was time for me to go out on my own and a friend of mine owned Print Two Impress. I had been working on a plan to open a Retail store and the Screen Printing allowed the business plan to work. I had no experience in Screen Printing or embroidery but jumped head first and bought the building and business. Lots of bumpy roads over the last year and half but through it all we are growing and will break 500k in revenue this year.
Brett Bowden - VIP
Printed Threads
Brett established Printed Threads in 2010 after being reacquainted with his love of screen printing. Having sold his first printing company in 2004, he spent many years traveling the country playing music. Upon graduating college with a Bachelor's degree in music in 2009, it was evident that choosing a different career path would be necessary. So the old skill of screen printing came in pretty handy. Since Printed Threads started in 2010 it has grown from a garage to a four-automatic operation in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2015 Inc. magazine featured the company at #826 on their 5000 fastest growing companies list. You can find Brett teaching classes for Ryonet or writing articles for The Ink Kitchen on occasion. When not screen printing, he prefers to be sailing or traveling with his wife and three kids.

Merch Monster Screen Printing
Like many Bay Area businesses, Merch Monster started in a garage. I needed a change from my career in IT project management and decided to revisit my passion for making physical products.
A few years prior I started an online t-shirt company, and worked with many screen printers. There were numerous challenges including non-existent customer service, lack of quality control and unpredictable delivery times.
It made me realize that there was an opportunity to improve the screen printing experience. So I decided to start a screen printing company committed to selling high-quality products with outstanding customer service.

Wear Your Spirit Warehouse
Ali Banholzer began Wear Your Spirit Warehouse in 2004, literally at her kitchen table. She was a mom of two beautiful baby girls, and a proud  military wife to her husband David. In 2010, the business out grew the house and moved to commercial space. Ali continued to support her young family and hold down the home front while David traveled, and did all that being an Air Force Officer entails.

Early in 2014 David became the 14th Presidential Pilot of the United States, and Commander of Air Force One, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Sadly, this dream was cut short in May of 2014 when David was diagnosed with terminal cancer. At that time, Ali closed down her commercial storefront and moved WYSW back to the house so she could care for David and her girls. With the help of incredible friends and employees, Ali was able to continue to run WYSW while caring for her husband. David passed in November of 2016. Ali took a bit of time to care for her girls, grieve, and plan.

In April of 2017 she moved WYSW back out into a small commercial location in Huntingtown. With the amazing support of friends, employees and the local  community, Ali was able to grow WYSW into the INTERNATIONAL company it is today, in their new larger location in Huntingtown.

We believe everyone has the capacity to soar and that we should have fun every day. Our story has taught us that life is short  and should be celebrated. We want to help your SPIRIT take FLIGHT!
Joe Sudrovic
Gorilla Joe Printing
Gorilla Joe Printing Co. started off in 2010 with the only aspiration to print shirts to pay off fines to keep me out of jail. I knew how to print a shirt since i had in the past for bands i was in but stopped the bigger the demand got for our merch.

But in the fall / late summer of 2010 i had purchased with the last 600 bux in my bank account a small table top setup. printing from seconds from local Gabriel Brothers stores i managed to pay off my fines super quick, and making a few bux on top of that as well....

therefore making my first used purchase of a press, heat press, little buddy dryer etc. growing slow but manageable into my first house i bought, printing from there for a year then moving to my first "shop" retail location. tiny shop filled to the brim, scary basement for screen reclaim and storage. it was an old corner store with apartments above me so in the early am reclaiming screens you can hear people singing in the shower and sometimes having sex.
moved from there in 2013 when i got my first auto to a bigger but not big enough place, this is were i really thought i knew everything....needless to say i didnt...
we took on more than what we were ready for, and although no huge failures cultivated this is the part of the story where i lost some money replacing stuff due to our lack of complete and utter communication.
so after almost two years there i came to my (now owned) warehouse to buy a cargo van for deliveries and joked with the guy about purchasing his warehouse...and he said yes it was for sale. within a week i made an offer. 6 months later moving in and this is now our production facility 17,000sqft on top floor, and 10,000sqft on bottom that is used to rent out for storage and bands to practice at night.
we now have 3 autos, 2 manuals, M&r CTS, Dryers, and all the necessities of printing.

Don Wilkinson -
DK Apparel
In 1996 I graduated with a bachelors degree in Administration of Justice from SIU Carbondale. I worked for UPS from 1996-2008 when I left with a lower back injury. In 2010 I decided to go into business for myself. I bought a heat press and as many others, worked out of my garage until 2012 when I rented my first retail location of 700 sq feet. I was armed with a heat press, one embroidery machine, laser engraver, and vinyl cutter. In the fall of 2015 I bought my first used manual press and put that in my garage. The summer of 2016 was a huge step for me. I was able to purchase my current two story building of 5700 sq ft downstairs and another 5000 sq ft upstairs. I also purchased my Roq auto and started automating as much equipment as I could. Two years have passed and we currently offer screen printing, embroidery(6 heads), wide format printing, laser engraving and awards/ trophies.

The focus of my shop is team/league business, school spirit wear and Corporate business.

It’s hard to run all of this as a ONE man shop!!!

Tanya LaGrange -
Southern Apparel
I met Joel in 2016, and when I met him, he told me about this “t-shirt business” he owned and operated out of his apartment, Southern Apparel. Not only did he eat, sleep, and shower there, but he was also designing, printing, and packaging t-shirts out of his kitchen. It was quite a sight.

Honestly, until that day, I never knew how in the world a t-shirt was actually printed

I am pretty sure I thought it was printed on a computer printer contraption…WRONG (college did not teach me about screen printing). I was actually still in college when Joel and I met and have since graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education.

While I was still in college I was like a little minion helping Joel out here and there. I honestly had no interest in it, but I would help out with whatever he needed. Well, I would say about 6 months went by and my feelings totally changed. So, my expensive college degree was used for me to teach at a private school for only 1 day. Then, I quit and decided my heart was in working with my fiancé. So, that is when I became superwoman! I began handling all customer service, managing inventory, delivering orders, visiting customers, bookkeeping, and the list goes on. I fell in love with what I was doing. It feels so good to see a customer’s face when they get that t-shirt in hand and it is exactly what they envisioned, and that is our #1 goal…CUSTOMER SATISFACTION.

It has been quite the journey; we have expanded this business dramatically, moving from working out of an apartment kitchen to working out of a fully functional shop with “big boy” equipment. I still giggle sometimes about the past and wonder how we managed to work in such a little space at one point. However, we did it, and it makes us so grateful about where we are today.
Patrick Crann
Patrick Crann founded Shout Out Loud Prints in 2003 at the age of 19. Slowly over the last 15 years the company grew from a small, one person shop out of his home, to a shop currently with 2 automatic presses and 11 employees. His interest in the fine details of the process and efficiencies in the shop have been the driving force that makes Shout Out Loud Prints a trusted and relied upon print shop in Columbus, Ohio.

Patrick has two cats, loves cooking, camping, and talking shop.
Taylor Landesman
Lawson Screen & Digital Products
Taylor is proud to be the 3rd generation owner at Lawson Screen & Digital Products. Named after the cross streets at the first Lawson headquarters, it’s rumored that Taylor has plastisol ink running through his veins.

Having started building exposure units at Lawson during his summer breaks from middle school, Taylor worked in various positions throughout the manufacturing process but took the long way to a full time career at Lawson. After graduating from Fordham Univeristy, Taylor managed research grants for Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City before getting his law degree from Washington University in St. Louis. After graduation, he moved to Chicago to practice insurance law and litigate pension issues for the State of Illinois.

Missing the draw of screen printing and fascinated by the advancements in DTG & CTS, Taylor rejoined Lawson in 2016. At Lawson, Taylor focuses on marketing, sales and helping screen printers achieve more.

Blue Cactus Printing
"Blue Cactus Printing has printed thousands of custom t-shirts and promotional items for businesses, schools, teams, clubs, and events since 2015. We love getting to know every client and their needs. We like to say that we love custom t-shirts but what we really love are the stories behind every shirt. Whether you need branded uniforms for your growing business or custom t-shirts for your Thursday night sports team, every t-shirt tells a story, every t-shirt tells your story. Let us help you tell it!

Many people often ask, “how did you come up with the name Blue Cactus Printing?” While on a road trip through Mexico, my wife and I came across a blue hued cactus. After sitting around brainstorming names for this screen printing company, I looked at his wife and said, “Remember those tequila shots and blue cactus?” We knew at that moment, Blue Cactus had to be a part of the name."

I started Elite Team Supply on my dining room table with a heat press and $150 6.5 years ago. Through a lot of up’s and down’s, multiple moves, and life changes, we’ve managed to win a couple Impressions awards for 4CP, multiple small business and entrepreneur of the year awards, speaking, magazines, and built a solid reputation amongst our peers

I started Lake Erie Life brand 2 years ago and we are currently growing that on Lake Erie. An artist at heart, we’ve built our reputation on artwork, seps, and technical ability to pull it all off. My motto has always been, “It’s just underwear until you slap some art on it.”
Austin Eilbeck
Austin Eilbeck has worked at Shout Out Loud Prints for over 3 years but has been a big fan and friend of the company since day one. It’s the people who order and the people who make the orders happen that makes his job enjoyable. He loves to be a part of people’s projects both big and small.

In his free time he plays and coaches ultimate frisbee, which is much different from frisbee golf :)

Joel Hebert
Southern Apparel
Like many of our peers, Southern Apparel started as a retail clothing line in the kitchen of a 600 sq. feet apartment (still not sure how we survived, flooded the apartment while making screens too many times to count!). In 2015, through a series of "happy accidents", we switched our focus to helping crossfit gyms and athletes. We have since grown out of that apartment kitchen into a nimble and efficient auto shop. My fiance’ and I now run the business together which is a very rewarding experience to share. Today, our mission is to partner with crossfit, health, and wellness organizations by MAKING IT EASY FOR THEM to provide their communities with high-performing custom merchandise. We love what we do and look forward to what the future holds for us!

Joe Ortinau
Ortinau Art
Ortinau Art began as my freelance graphic design business. I provided my customers with graphics for just about every type of printing process. When my wife and I moved from Charleston, SC to Pemberville, OH (her hometown) in 2012, the company that I began working for had screen printing equipment and introduced me to the custom apparel world. I began offering my freelance clients custom apparel. I used my daytime employer as my contracted printer until I was able to save enough money to purchase my own equipment. We actually purchased a DTG printer first and ran it out of a finished room above our garage until I was able to build a customer base large enough to leave my full time position in April of 2015. By July of the same year, we opened our retail location and have been growing every year and adding to our capabilities along the way. We now offer screen printing, embroidery, DTG and large format printing all in house. We are still a small town shop but we have grown to three team members and have big plans for the future. I attribute the growth of our business to the high level of customer service that we strive to provide and relying on word of mouth referrals from existing customers.

Local Seams
Started off working for my dad's promotional wood products manufacturing business through high school and college and loved seeing the different ads and promotional items he produced. After graduation I took a job as an allied healthcare recruiter -- later became a director of Marketing and Business Development for a mid-sided credit union. Both of these jobs had awesome perks but I always felt like I needed more control especially when things had gone wrong and needed to be corrected as soon as possible.

I realized I also missed the aspect of producing a tangible product and running my own business would give me the responsibility and control I was looking for. I loved graphic design and marketing and decided the best course was to work for a current company and learn. And I'm glad I did -- I worked for a local screen print, embroidery and graphic design company from 2014-2016 and left to co-found, Local Seams. This Friday the 26th (the Friday of ShirtLab) will be our companies two year anniversary. It's also the day we move into our new (to us) 700 SF shop with retail area, office space and small production area in the back. Over the past two years we've focused on creating an efficient work flow and building strong relationships with our subcontractors so that we could start marketing and really scale our company when we were confident we could handle the growth. **Fun fact about me -- I myself have never pulled a squeegee to print a shirt and have challenged myself never to do so. I want to focus on growing the business, not producing the items. Focus on what I'm good at and let the printers do the same -- works best for everyone.** Looking forward to learning about how to effectively market our business and scale it with the contract partnerships we've worked to create over the previous two years.

Ink Mob
If someone would have told me in 5 years I would have an amazing team of artists, printers, dedicated members that all have a common goal, a 29,000 sq ft facility, 2 top of the line autos and all the trimmings of a major player in the screen printing industry.....I would have told them the were absolutely nuts! But here we are today with just that scenario!! I am blessed beyond belief! I started in the promotional products industry 20 years ago and 5 years ago I saw a niche and a need for a true contract screen printer in the industry. So I followed my gut and with some incredible luck, we have grown to be one of the most trusted in this crazy business. We have achieved this great honor by having unwavering ethics, incredible quality, impeccable service and an amazing team of talented people, if not for them, we would have never achieved this success! Our people are our process!

"Blessed are the weird people- the poets and misfits; the artists, the writers, and music makers; the dreamers, and the outsiders, for they force us to see the world differently."

Hellatees
Hellatees is a bay area based company started in a garage in 2011. Offering screen printing for friends and family or word of mouth referrals . In 2014, we changed directions and offered DTG printing and contracted out screen printing and embroidery services. Since 2014 the company has carved out a nice little niche with the DTG in the San Jose area and now do the embroidery in house and just recently got back into screen printing. We took a little different approach than most by having all our in person interaction with customers in a retail setting at a mall and hope to continue to grow to add an auto in the next year.
